Why is the concept of adaptive behavior important in identifying individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

What will be an ideal response?

The inclusion of adaptive behavior in the identification process reflects the greater emphasis on the environment and context of the child and serves as a balance to data collected by means of standardized tests, providing a more complete picture of the individual evaluated. It is possible that an individual would perform in a substandard manner on an IQ test but demonstrate adequate skills in the community and as a result not be considered IDD. The information gained through an adaptive behavior assessment provides educators with a focus for intervention planning and skill development.
