In Windows XP, shortcuts (the icons that users put on their desktop) are implemented as soft links—if the file or programto which they are connected is moved, the shortcuts point to nothing. What are the advantages and disadvantages of replacing shortcuts with hard links?
What will be an ideal response?
Replacing the shortcuts with hard links would ensure that desktop icons are always
accurate. However, it would make uninstalling a program more difficult. Currently, when a
program is deleted, any shortcuts that remain take up only a small amount of space. However,
a user could unintentionally delete the file by deleting the hard link to the file.
