Explain how residential burglars select their targets

Fill in the blank(s) with the appropriate word(s).

Answer: Most residential burglars have potential targets in mind before committing their offenses. There are several ways burglars select a target. Often a burglar selects as targets residences of individuals that are known to them (although usually not those owned by close friends or family). Burglars generally only target residences of friends and loved ones if they feel vengeful towards that person or if they are in especially desperate need of money. Burglars may also select targets based on information from tipsters, who pass on information in exchange for a fee or cut of the take. Tipsters may be service workers who are familiar with household routines and possessions. Finally, burglars may select targets based on observation of a potential target.
