If the media are so powerful in forming public opinion, why has there been a negative reaction to both the Scottish Sun and the BBC?

When, in 2007, the Scottish Sun ran a front page story entitled ‘Vote SNP and you put Scotland’s head in the noose’, the Scottish people didn’t take kindly to this kind of goading and the popularity of the SNP kept growing. How things have changed though. In 2015 when Mr Andrew Nicoll, political editor of the Scottish Sun, was asked about the SNP he said ‘We are a Scottish newspaper, run in Scotland, printed in Scotland, produced in Scotland by Scots’.
