Answers will vary. Students should be able to state the arguments, pro and con, for various ways of assigning maintenance, which is the theme of Case In Point 12.2 on page 420.
In addition, Paperback Press must establish priorities for handling and assigning maintenance requests. There are two choices when setting priorities: (1) separate maintenance requests from new systems development requests, or (2) put all requests for systems services into one group to be considered together with the most important project getting top priority, whether it is maintenance or new development. Neither approach guarantees an ideal allocation between maintenance and new systems development. The most important objective is to have a procedure that balances new development and necessary maintenance work to provide the best support for business requirements and priorities.
