A ratio is the relationship between two quantities, such as the two adjacent sides of a rectangle. There are examples of standard rectangle ratios in the world around us. Sometimes these are expressed as aspect ratio, in a format of x:y, where the x is width and y the height. For example, older televisions had a screen aspect ratio of 4:3 (1.33:1). High-definition televisions use a screen aspect ratio of 16:9 (about 1.78:1).
