Describe the five functions of nonverbal behaviors and provide an example of each function
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: The first function is communicating information, which means using nonverbal behaviors to help clarify verbal messages and reveal attitudes and motivation. To do this, nonverbal behaviors can repeat, highlight, complement, contradict, or substitute for a message. An example would be shaking your head to indicate disagreement. The second function is regulating interaction, which means using nonverbal behaviors to help manage conversational interaction. An example would be leaning forward and raising a finger to indicate that you want to interrupt a speaker. The third function is expressing and managing intimacy, which means using nonverbal behaviors to help convey attraction to others. For example, you can lean forward and establish eye contact to show interest in someone. The fourth function is establishing social control, which means using nonverbal communication to exert influence over other people. For example, you can smile and touch someone lightly on the arm if you want them to do you a favor. The fifth function is signaling service-task function, which means using nonverbal behavior to signal close involvement between people in impersonal relationships and contexts. For example, a yoga trainer may use touch to move a person into the proper pose.
