Discuss the purpose and circumstances of inventory searches
What will be an ideal response?
Inventory searches by definition are searches that are conducted by law enforcement personnel of an individual's personal belongings. They are conducted in various situations and include those in which a suspect is taken into custody or a car is impounded. Theoretically, these searches are designed to protect the individual by documenting all items in his or her personal possession before arrest or seizure. Inventories must be conducted in a legal a manner and are not intended to conceal an investigatory police motive that is outside the parameters of the inventory itself. Arrest inventories are conducted during routine booking procedures and because they are not based on probable cause no warrant is needed.
