Working in small groups, research some of the actions that organisations have taken in response to the introduction of the National Living Wage. Then, consider whether these actions mean that the balance of power has been altered in favour of the employees or the employer.

What will be an ideal response?

? There are various employers who have taken actions, from reducing overtime
rates, cutting shift premia and reducing the lunch entitlements of employees.
? It could be argued that there is no change in the balance of power. The employees
are being paid more but are getting fewer benefits, and in total there is no change.
? However, it could also be argued that this is a classic example of an employer
having additional power. It does not like what the government has done in
introducing the NLW and hence it reacts. It cannot be stopped from doing this
(presuming that the changes are not breaching contract).
? Even if there is no impact on the balance of power it could have a negative impact
on the psychological contract.
