Discuss guidelines for the media in reference to crime coverage
What will be an ideal response?
Essentially the police and the media have different functions, and the difference can bring them into conflict. The police's tasks are to prevent crime, maintain law and order, protect the citizens of the community, and apprehend lawbreakers. Yet, the media in a free society have an obligation to seek out and report the truth, even though the truth may embarrass or hinder the police. In addition, the First Amendment gives the media the right to make known information even if someone objects to the content. Nevertheless, the Society of Professional Journalists has had a Code of Ethics since 1926 . However, this code does not specifically cover all the incidents that may arise in the reporting of crime-related information. The Code of Ethics as noted in the text has a number of important and practical suggestions such as: seek the truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently, and be accountable.
