Explain the various features that reformed the healthcare system in the U.S. when the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed in 2010. How have these features evolved since then?
What will be an ideal response?
1. Children are able to stay on parents’ insurance up to age 26. This remains one of the most popular parts of the law.
2. ACA made it illegal for insurance companies to refuse coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
3. Initially, the ACA included an insurance mandate – which meant all Americans had to have healthcare coverage through some means. This was the most controversial piece of the ACA and was ultimately overturned in 2017, which creates some instability in the market because the mandate was initially intended to address the issue of adverse selection in the market.
4. Medicaid was expanded, though this expansion is left up to individual states.
