A virtual private network (VPN) is often used by employees when they work away from the corporate network to connect to that network by way of the Internet. A VPN protects data by encrypting it from the time it leaves the remote computer until it reaches a server on the corporate network. The encryption technique is called a tunnel or tunneling.
