Criminal behavior may be learned from a number of sources. The chapter discussed several. List and discuss five of those sources. Which one do you believe to be the primary source? Why?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: The general culture, the community, the peer group, correctional institutions, the military, sports, the media, pornography. A culture that emphasizes machismo may see more violence committed against women. The community may be a source of criminal behavior when adult offenders and juveniles have a close relationship. Adolescents who are concerned about their reputation may be influenced by their friends and do not commit crime for that reason. Jails and prisons are sometimes described as "schools of crime." As per the military, exposure to the stress of combat increased the risk of criminal behavior. There is evidence that sports contribute to the aggressiveness of athletes and spectators. The media may be a source of criminal behavior because of the violence depicted on television and the movies.
