What are the main features of the diet typical of northern Europeans that today are typical of the American diet in general?

American food habits have been greatly influenced by British and Irish immigrants. Meal patterns and composition are very similar to those in Great Britain. The typical meal of a meat, poultry, or fish main dish served with vegetable and starch side dishes, and often bread, continues to this day. The influence of the British and French on American cuisine is undoubtedly one reason the U.S. diet is high in cholesterol and fat, and low in fiber and complex carbohydrates.
