The primary purpose of construction drawings is to communicate the intended elements, systems, and relationships of the materials, equipment, and assemblies to the contractor in the construction of the facility. The documents also provide the necessary information for the contractor to compile a cost estimate and plan the construction process for the project. The construction documents also should provide sufficient information for the preparation of shop drawings and submittals for material suppliers and fabricators as well as provide information to the owner of the facility after the construction is completed for the maintenance and operation of the facility. Usually the construction documents are noted to reflect changes during the construction phase of the project, referred to as "as-built drawings" for use by the owner during the operation of the facility.
