You are preparing J.T.'s parents for the procedure. Describe the points you would address in

your teaching.

What will be an ideal response?

Preprocedure: An IV with dextrose, especially necessary in young infants who might have been NPO
for several hours before the procedure, will be started. The procedure typically requires IV sedation,
and usually there is no need for general anesthesia. J.T. will be closely monitored during the
procedure. A catheter will be introduced through the right femoral vein and guided carefully to the
right side of the heart, where pictures and measurements will be taken.
Postprocedure: J.T. will return to the unit once she is awake. She will have a pressure dressing
at her right groin at the insertion site. It will be important to keep her leg straight for 4 to 6 hours
after the procedure. Staff will be monitoring her VS and assessing the dressing frequently. She
will probably have medication ordered if she is uncomfortable. J. should be able to feed once fully
awake.
