Answer: Ambien is a short-term treatment for insomnia with a half-life of about two and a half hours. There is little or no muscle relaxation at recommended does, but it should not be combined with alcohol. Lunesta was introduced about ten years later as another treatment for insomnia, but having the option as a longer treatment. Lunesta has a half-life of six hours and is recommended for people who have difficulty staying asleep.

High doses can produce impairment. Sleepwalking, sensory hallucinations, binge eating during the night and driving while sleeping have all been reported. Additional warnings regarding these symptoms have been applied to the label and they have been widely publicized.
