Explain the process of fracking and list the primary environmental concerns associated with this practice
What will be an ideal response?
Fracking is a method of extracting natural gas from shale formations underground. Highly pressurized fluids are pumped underground that allow oil and gas to flow to the surface for extraction. The concerns about fracking are based on its likelihood of contaminating underground wells, surface water, and aquifers, and clean-up of this type of contamination is difficult or impossible to do. Airborne pollution also occurs from gases that are released during this process. And there is concern that fracking can increase the risk of earthquakes. In addition, discharge and disposal of waste is an ongoing concern.
