What is the purpose of having students say a continuous sound for several seconds?

What will be an ideal response?

Holding sounds for several seconds prepares students for word reading tasks. When sounding out a word, the students not only say the sound but must simultaneously look ahead at the next letter. Being able to hold a sound prevents pausing errors when sounding out words.
