Briefly compare/contrast the use of EBP in medicine and the behavioral sciences.
What will be an ideal response?
The interesting point about the use of EBP is the perspective that, in medicine, previously a physician would consult a senior, more experienced physician for answers to problems. The EBP approach does not exclude the use of this approach but encourages the use of more scientific evidence in decision making. As Slocum et al. suggested the use of evidence-based practice is more than attempting to use the “best” evidence but does require good professional judgment particularly with an understanding of one’s client (client or student) with a particular context. Professional judgment may be enhanced through discussion with peers and through supervision. Additionally consultation with peers and supervisors may enhance an understanding of the context and how and when to use the intervention.
