Athletes with chronic energy deficit (energy output > energy intake) tend to have high levels of cortisol. Do you expect their immune systems would be better than those who are sedentary? Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
People who exercise moderately have better immune systems than sedentary. However, people who exercise
strenuously experience a decrease in immune function. Athletes in chronic energy deficit tend to be strenuous
exercisers. In addition, cortisol suppresses the immune system (Chapter 23). Therefore, due to the elevated cortisol
levels and the exercise stress, these individuals would likely exhibit a suppressed immune response.
