Satellites are used for many types of communication, including telephone and television. Describe how they are used, and include the age of the satellite system and any vulnerability inherent in the system.

What will be an ideal response?

Satellites were fi rst used in the late 1950s and, by the 1970s, had gained increasing popularity. Various satellites are in use so worldwide communications by telephone rely on beaming a signal to a satellite, which in turn retransmits the signal to earth. Repeaters are stationed on earth so the signal can hop around the world to the desired location. Satellites have lifetimes, they need to be replaced, and they are vulnerable to space debris, old satellites and parts of satellites, as well as to meteorites, which can damage the satellite.
