No matter what paths wireless signals take, they are bound to run into obstacles. When they do, the original signal issued by the transmitter will experience fading, or a variation in signal strength as a result of some of the electromagnetic energy being scattered, reflected, or diffracted after being issued by the transmitter. Multipath signaling is a significant cause of fading. Because of fading, the strength of the signal that reaches the receiver is lower than the transmitted signal's strength. This makes sense because as more waves are reflected, diffracted, or scattered by obstacles, fewer are likely to reach their destination on time and without errors. Excessive fading can cause dropped calls or slow data transmission.
