Police officers generally know that they could be injured or killed at any time because of the nature of crime and the inherent danger in police work. If police feel that a citizen is going to lie to them and cause them bodily harm, they need to keep objective distance from the citizen. Police officers also need to keep their objectivity and their temper while being threatened and insulted. In order to have this much self control, there is a need to have psychological and emotional distance from clients who might resist having to be taken into custody.
