Three reasons why students may have reading problems include; (i) the English language is very complex with 1,120 ways to spell 44 phonemes; (ii) difficulty understanding and using the alphabetic principle, that written spellings represent spoken words, words are made up letters, the letter system has a purpose and letters correspond to specific sounds, and ultimately that 26 letters (graphemes) are used to map the 44 sounds (phonemes); (iii) difficulty transferring spoken language comprehension skills to reading and learning new strategies.
