1. Experts have a more elaborate semantic network for items in their area of expertise.
2. They are thus able to organize items together in categories and recall them as chunks.
3. For example, an expert chess player has more ways to relate chess-related knowledge to what she already knows. She will organize that information based on related categories and then recall that information in chunks. A novice player would have nothing to relate the new information to and would have to recall that information in isolation.
