Describe the benefits and dangers associated with genetic screening
A pro argument could be made on the basis of individual self-determination (autonomy) over paternalism. If people knew that they were going to suffer from a disease, they could plan their lives in ways that maximize their pleasure and perhaps even plan their reproductive lives around the condition. If the test was done prenatally, one could make a virtue ethics argument that it would empower the decision making of the parents. In regard to a con argument, the case could be made that given false positives and cost-to-benefit ratios, genetic screening might not have a high utility for the individual or society. If one knew, especially if the tests were done prenatally, would abortion be pushed? It is possible that such knowledge could affect one's insurance and employment possibilities.
