As a social worker, a program for people with dementia could be devised in collaboration with a music therapist. The music therapist could play songs, meaningful to specific stages of the older persons’ lives, and ask the people to sing along or tap on their knee. The social worker could follow with questions about stories associated with the songs, instruments the participants once played or other songs that come to mind. The participants could be invited to move to the music or just listen. If the persons were in early stages of dementia and higher functioning, the music could be incorporated into a reminiscence group. Or referrals to music groups (choirs for older adults0 could be made complement other interventions.
