Describe the purposes of the telnet command.

What will be an ideal response?

As its name implies, the use of the telnet command is to establish a Telnet connection to another host. Once logged in on the remote host, you can work on the remote host as if you were working at a console at the remote location. The main disadvantage of Telnet in comparison to SSH (secure shell) is that the connection is not encrypted.
In addition to its primary purpose, the telnet command can be used to test the availability of TCP-based services by adding the port you want to connect to. If you are able to connect to a remote service, such as a Web server, you know that the network setup and routing are correct.
