Why can we infer that lactation must have evolved at least by the time of the first mammal?

What will be an ideal response?

The earliest mammals show precise occlusion of their teeth and are also diphyodont. (Precise occlusion would be impossible with continually replacing teeth.) But it would be impossible to slow the rate of dental replacement if the newborns had to eat solid food right away. Thus we infer that newborn mammals were receiving milk from their mother.
