What is the role of MRI in breast cancer screening?
What will be an ideal response?
MRI can detect small carcinomas in dense breast tissue that is otherwise difficult to detect using a mammogram. In addition, an MRI can detect increase blood flow to the breast that is associated with the presence of a breast tumor. Given these advantages offered by an MRI, some clinicians use it as a supplementary screening procedure particularly for those with a strong genetic predisposition for breast cancer and who have BRCA1 and BRCA2.
