The Federal Communications Act, originally passed in 1934, does not specifically mention the potential interest of law enforcement agencies in monitoring communications. However two major telecommunications companies in the United States—AT&T and Verizon—are known to have contracts with the FBI, requiring them to keep their phone call records easily searchable and accessible for federal agencies, in return for $1.8 million dollars per year.
