How does the Blauner hypothesis relate to Native Americans on reservations?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Students should discuss that consistent with the Blauner hypothesis, Native Americans on the reservations were subjected to coercive acculturation or forced Americanization. Their cultural norms were attacked. The government would offer U.S. citizenship to those Native Americans who took the land and lived away from their tribal communities. The intention was to give each Indian family the means to survive like their white neighbors and to encourage Native people to assimilate into the larger white society. Once the land had been allotted, the U.S. government than put the rest up for sale to non-Native settlers.
