Converting the numerator of a ratio fraction into a whole number requires multiplying by the inverse. When a class is represented by the fraction 3/5, for example, 3/5 can be converted by a whole number by multiplying by 5/1 (or 5). 5 was chosen as the multiple in this problem because it is the denominator of the fraction that represents “all” (5/5). To maintain balance, the fraction representing all of the classes (5/5) also needs to be multiplied by 5. Multiplying both of the fractions by 5 creates equivalent fractions. These fractions can be reduced to 3/5. The final fraction, 3/5, represents the sub-class over all of the classes. This translates into whole numbers: 3 for the sub-class and 5 for all of the classes.
