Explain how the reaction of a law enforcement officer to a crime victim can affect the victim and influence the level of cooperation the officer will receive, both on the current case and in future ones
What will be an ideal response?
The way people cope with crime depends largely on their experiences immediately after a crime. A victim of crime's first interaction is with police officers. As the first responders, police officers can help victims cope and help to restore a sense of security and control over their lives. How people view the police will determine how they view the entire criminal justice system and determine whether they trust the police, whether they will cooperate with the investigation and whether they will want to be involved at all. An officer's sensitivity can lead to greater participation by victims in later prosecution or in future victimizations (see pages 61-62).
