Answer: Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) drugs block the reuptake of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin in neurons in the brain. This allows the norepinephrine and serotonin to bind with receptors and prolongs their actions until they are eventually broken down. This corrects the low levels of these neurotransmitters that are found in patients with depression. Also, tricyclic antidepressant drugs increase the sensitivity of receptors on the neurons to both norepinephrine and serotonin.
