Why do wolves have to hunt deer over a larger territory than the deer require for grazing?

When any living thing feeds on another organism, not all of the food energy is used; some energy is lost from the system. Additional energy is expended through respiration and movement. At each successive trophic level, the amount of energy required becomes greater. As the flow of energy decreases with each successive trophic level, the biomass also decreases.
