Discuss the trends of opiod pain medications (specifically OxyCotin, Vicodin, and Percocet). How are these prescription drugs being obtained for misuse? What have been responses to this medication abuse and have they been effective?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Nonmedical use of opioid medications is a national epidemic. OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin are the most common abused. Opiod medication overdose deaths account for about 1/3 of all overdose drug deaths. Abusers cut across age, socioeconomic status, location, and gender.

Prescriptions are obtained by seeing multiple doctors, seeking a high or lose doses, obtained from other countries, and purchased online. The drugs are sold on the street. Users also take them from friends or relatives. There has also been an increase of pharmacy robberies.

Responses include only electronic prescriptions to reduce forged paper prescriptions, nationwide programs for prescription monitoring, alternative treatment options offered prior to a opioid prescriptions, and education and training of physicians. These responses have been recommended but not fully enacted. They would be a start to respond to the growing problem, but as of yet they are not effective.
