ANSWER: While it is impossible to predict the future, the answer would be, not likely. The primary
event that turned the ancient forests to coal was the relatively rapid rising and falling of the
seas, leading to layer after layer of decayed tree matter pressed in the sediment. The current
climate of the Earth is not experiencing this, and thus our current forests will likely decay
into non-coal organic matter.
