Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia are often comorbid for other psychological disorders. Discuss the comorbid diagnoses described in your text, as well as associated features
What will be an ideal response?
Depression affects approximately 45% of people with schizophrenia and about 5% commit suicide. Suicide rates are much higher during the initial onset of the disorder and immediately before or after any inpatient hospitalization. Approximately 47% have comorbid anxiety disorders; posttraumatic stress disorder occurs in 43% of patient samples. This may be the result of victimization or violence due to impoverished living conditions. Substance abuse occurs among 50% of persons diagnosed as schizophrenic and compounds impairment in daily functioning. Patients who are comorbid for substance abuse are more likely to be homeless, to relapse and be rehospitalized, and to be non-compliant with treatment.
