Prion diseases are responsible for TSEs. Explain the states of prions and our understanding about their involvement in TSEs. Discuss how a TSE can be transmitted to humans.
What will be an ideal response?
Prions are proteins with alternate shapes, and are believed to be transmitted to humans by contact with neural material that contains prions. Since the incubation period is unusually long, usually years, and not inflammation is observed in infected tissues, these diseases are difficult to diagnose prior to the onset of symptoms. Normal sterilization techniques have been ineffective in preventing transmission of the disease.
