In October 1975, Susan Speeth was stabbed to death by a stranger just a block from her home. Speeth's murder inspired women and men to rally on campuses to raise awareness about crimes against women, and to call upon those in control to make public areas safe. Thus Take Back the Night, a national foundation, was born, and public events during April and October became established features on many campuses.
Take Back the Night continues to be an important organization that welcomes participation from both women and men and drives home the message that women have the right to walk safely in their communities.
