Who usually conducts treatment for sexual offenders? What does the treatment entail?
What will be an ideal response?
Typically, a psychologist or psychiatrist is charged with supervising these types of programs, but many treatment providers may be master’s-level social workers and/or counselors. These individuals will often have specialized forms of education and/or training that is required to work with sex offenders. In fact, most states will have a registry or roster of mental health professionals who are given the legal authority to work with sex offenders. This demonstrates how important it is to ensure that those who work with this population are appropriately trained and credentialed. Sex offender programs today most often use a combination of cognitive-behavioral techniques and relapse prevention strategies.
