Explain the role “danger” and “suspicion” play in police culture.
What will be an ideal response?
Danger and suspicion may affect the personality of police officers. The potential for danger is constant in police work and keeps officers focused on detecting danger to protect themselves. To manage this risk, officers may identify “symbolic assailants” or those who are perceived to be potential threats. Often they have to make these split-second decisions with limited information. Suspicion is also a key, as officers may be become suspicious of the motives and intentions of people, including the public. As police action is often misunderstood by the public, officers may be reluctant to share information regarding their activities. This may lead to an “us versus them” mentality, and the desire to protect fellow officers may lead to the development of a “code of silence.” When this code prevents officers from reporting on the misconduct of fellow officers, it becomes an ethical issue. When it prevents officers from seeking input from the community, it may lead to distrust and misunderstanding by the community.
