Prepare a preliminary plan for the meeting
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: Students' answers will vary. Social workers engage in preliminary planning before meetings, contacts, and
interviews with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities with whom we interact as part of our
professional responsibilities. We plan before social media blitzes, protests, demonstrations, marches, boycotts, and
other forms of social activism. Of course, planning is not limited to initial meetings or first encounters. Social
workers plan in advance of subsequent meetings and activities as well. Begin the process of formulating preliminary
plans by asking and answering questions such as "Why is this meeting, event, or activity occurring? What is its
overall purpose? What do we hope to accomplish? What is our tentative agenda? What might be the agenda of other
people who will be involved or affected by this encounter? What might they hope to accomplish? What would we
consider success? What might success look like to others? What are our functions or roles in this meeting, activity,

or event? How do we wish to begin? What things should we say? What questions should we ask? What might others
want to ask of us? What kind of interactional process would we like to see? What kind might others want or expect?
How do we hope the meeting will conclude? How might others like to see it end?" The specifics of preliminary
planning for meetings vary somewhat according to the purpose for the meeting, activity, or event; the circumstances;
how many people are involved; and who they are.
