The most common method for regulating IV flow rate to a client is:
a. using a roller clamp and gravity flow
b. using a volume controller to maintain preselected flow rate
c. using an IV pump to regulate flow rate adding pressure when needed to maintain rate
d. using a time strip on IV solution bag
C
The flow rate for IV solutions can be regulated by calculating the drops per minute and adjusting the drip rate to that number or by the use of volume controllers and pumps. The IV infusion rate is generally regulated by an infusion pump also known as an IV pump or electronic infusion device (EID), an electronic device used to control flow of IV solutions or medications. Pumps maintain a preselected volume delivery by adding pressure when needed. Resistance may develop from the use of a large catheter in a small vein, high venous pressure, infusing a viscous solution, or a decrease in the height of the container from the IV site. Resistance causing a decrease in the flow will sound the controller alarm indicating that the pump has reached its maximum pressure limit. Pumps may be used when large volumes must be delivered in a short period and for viscous fluids.
