Name and briefly describe the four stages of the cycle of abuse.

What will be an ideal response?

In the first stage, relational tensions build in the abuser because of blame attributed to the partner for problems or for not being supportive. Those tensions, in the second stage, erupt into violence and one or more battering incidents occur. In the third stage, the abuser experiences remorse and promises the victim that the abuse will never happen again. In the final stage, there is a lull in violence, and the victim feels loved again, but relational tensions will build and the cycle of abuse repeats.
