Describe Socratic questioning and give an example of a Socratic question a CBT therapist might ask a client.
What will be an ideal response?
Socratic questioning is named after Socrates, who believed that all people had “truths” locked inside them and that these truths could be discovered through their responses to precise and disciplined questions. When answering these questions, clients become aware of their assumptions, contradictions, and knowledge. These questions are also designed to help increase clients’ awareness of their feelings, behaviors, and thoughts. An example of a Socratic question is “What is the worst thing that can happen to you if you get a ‘B’ in this course instead of an ‘A’?”
