In current times, women are not generally thought of as warriors. However, in medieval times, a wife or daughter would have been expected to defend the castle against aggressors. In Scotland there was a woman born (c. 1300 – c. 1369) who was the daughter of the great Randolph, Earl of Moray. This woman was famed for her bravery. Her name was Black Agnes Randolph. She was so named because she had a dark complexion and dark hair. Black Agnes proved to be a fierce warrior when she was young and fought for de Bruce. She is better known, though, for successfully holding the Castle of Dunbar against the English enemy in 1334. The Earl of Salisbury laid siege to the castle for over five months, but Black Agnes hurled rocks and insults at the English. As a last attempt, the enemy brought Agnes’s brother to the castle gates and threatened to kill him. Agnes responded by saying that if they killed her brother that would merely mean that she would become the Earl of Moray! _1. Agnes didn’t love her brother. _2.
