Explain why we need to square deviations before calculating the variance of a variable.
What will be an ideal response?
We square deviations before calculating the variance because the mean deviation (when you simply take the average of all the deviations from the mean) is always zero. The mean is by definition the mathematical centre. By squaring, we instead capture “distance from the mean”.
